Solar And Wind Power: A Solution For The Homes Energy Needs

One big factor that hinders people in their quest for alternative energy sources is the amount of money involved. Past experiences have proven that one will have to count years and thousands of dollars on investment before any profit is realized in building a solar or a wind power system. Nonetheless, there is but another means to utilize the abundant natural energy that we have at a relatively cheaper price. It is more economical in the sense that you will install the system yourself and need not hire an outside company to do it for you.

Ultimately, the advantages of solar and wind power must first be discussed. A household should have both systems since it is not guaranteed that the sun will always shine o that the wind will always blow. At night when there is no sun, you can still produce free electricity through your wind power generator.

The foremost benefit of solar power is the efficiency that it brings especially when the weather is mostly sunny. In addition, there are no movable components making it easier to maintain. If the area where you are from has the sun present 80% of the time, then it is far better to use solar panels for your energy source. Nonetheless, it is still better to have both the wind and the sun for your homes energy needs.
On the contrary, wind power or wind generator is of greater benefit if your home is located in an area where there is a lot of wind. In most cases, wind turbines are built up above the tree line to make sure that enough wind is acquired. If the wind speed is 5 miles per hour or more, this can already generate electric power. Furthermore, with the use of a good generator, your electric bill will even lessen drastically.
For the abovementioned systems, you have the option to choose whether your system will be directly connected to your power grid (this makes your meter rotate backwards when there is more energy produced by your system) or if you intend to store the extra electricity into batteries with high capacity. The electric power that will be produced unfortunately is in DC form of current, therefore, a converter is needed in order to transform the DC current into AC that is being utilized in the home.
You have to remember that you can build your solar or wind power generator at a minimum cost. You can take advantage of the kits that are sold in the market nowadays. Moreover, you can research from websites about the set up instructions and improvements. Constructing your own solar and wind power generator is a good idea in line with todays economic crisis. U.s. Wind & Solar Electricity Generators Desperately Needed!

The United States has 620 electricity generating plants as of January 2007. Electrical demand is at an all time high and climbing. The cost of electricity has increased dramatically over the years.

The electrical industry powers more than 175 million computers and the electrical needs of over 200 million cell phones. Computers consume 13% of the total electricity used. Electrical consumption is expected to grow by 45% by 2030. Americans homes have become much bigger over the years which have contributed to the increased demand.
Did you know that Solar & wind generators supply only 0.2% of the energy consumed by Americans? Have you ever thought of unplugging from the electrical grid for good altogether or for the most part? All you need is knowledge of wind generating or solar equipment.
There are people building their own systems for around 200 dollars. All that is required is the right knowledge and some extra time. The components are readily available in your area for much less than most people think.
The useful life of a wind generator is around 30 years. Studies have shown that the noise from a residential wind generator is about the same as a household refrigerator. Wind generators have a cut-in speed of around 7 miles an hour of wind. Some will require a little less wind to operate.
Many states have rebate or tax credit programs to incourage people to move forward with alternative energy. Credits are also available from the federal government. If you live within 2 miles of an airport there will likely be a height restriction in place. Towers that are less than 200 feet tall do not require lights on them.
Solar panels that are built at home or purchased are often used in combination with a wind generator. Then you are covered for the days that there is not enough wind but plenty of sunshine is available to produce the much needed electricity. If the restrictions in your area forbid the use of a wind generator then you could use a solar panel by it self to cut the electric bill down. All you need to do is acquire the knowledge, set aside the time, and get with it saving money.

Build Your Own Domestic Wind Turbine

Building your own domestic wind turbine is not as difficult as you may think. However forethought and planning will make all the difference in how effective your turbine wind generators are at providing power.

When looking to build you own wind turbine there are a few things you should consider first.

Your total power requirements – this will determine balde size and number of turbines
How windy is my site – Reduce the initial estimate by 30-50% (we will explain below)
Placement – Do I have good sites on te roof. Will my neighbours or the local council object?

Your Total Power Requirements.
A general rule for calculating how many and what size of domestic wind turbine you require is this. A average modern home consumes around 4,500 kWh. a year. In rough terms a domestic wind turbine with a 2 metre rotor diameter can yield (in good conditions) 500 kWh. per year. Alternatively a domestic wind turbine with a 5 metre rotor diameter can yield closer to 4,500 kWh on a good site. As you see the relationship between rotor diameter and power generation is not linear.

So firstly determine you annual kWh. power needs. From then determine how many and what type of domestic wind turbine you will install. Lastly,determine where will you install them?

How Windy is my site
Many people overestimate the wind speed and quality around their home. This is because the same building, trees and obstacles that make the wind sound like it is howling, are also cutting the force of the wind. This is why we generally lower the estimate on wind speed if the home is in a urban or suburban area. This ensures that we don’t underestimate the number of turbine wind generators we need.

Also look into the different types of turbine wind generator. Research what different types of wind generator will best suit your needs. In terms of building your own domestic wind turbine the key thing is to get a balance between your needs and your skills. It may be easier to build and site more smaller wind generators than a few big 5 metre, or vertical turbine wind generators.

Placement
In simple terms their are two options. On short towers on the roof on buildings. On tall ground towers. The vast majority of domestic wind turbine are placed on the roof, on a tower at a height that ensures the wind’s force is not dampened by the roof structure. They can also of coure be placed on a free standing towers away from any buildings or trees.

The key thing is to determine numbers, size and placement before you begin. In this way little complications like the domestic wind generator being too large for the place you have choosed, or not having enough wind in that spot, can be avioded.

You can find many plans for building turbine wind generators online, however this may not be the perfect solution. Firstly any alternative energy generation plan should have multiple power sources. For this reason you should always at least consider solar to supplement any power, even just installing diy solar water heating will help.
